People often use the term “Mood swings” in a wrong way. When someone is being emotional, people say he/she has a mood swing, but their reaction to the situation might be perfectly normal.  Someone who cries often or someone who gets angry very easily doesn’t necessarily mean that he/she is dealing with mood swings; they just have a strong emotion perhaps. Here are some ways to get over mood swings.

1. GET ADEQUATE SLEEP

When you are dealing with mood swings, it is natural that you feel annoyed and frustrates. And not getting proper sleep is only going to make you crankier. First, you need to calm yourself, and for that, you need to get proper sleep. Sleep at least for 8 hours every night. Don’t watch TV before bed, in fact, do not do anything before bed.

2. STAY AWAY FROM ALCOHOL

When you are already feeling depressed, it is best to avoid alcohol, as it is only going to make things worse for you. So, try not to drink more than one glass of wine per day, if you must. Because alcohol can have the bad affect on your mood and mess up your sleep cycle. Alcohol also messes with your sense, so there are chances that you might over think about your current situation and make things worse for yourself.

Caffeine is considered as a psychoactive drug that triggers anxiety and other stress-related signs. So it is best to avoid caffeine as much as possible. People who are sensitive to caffeine should especially limit their coffee intake as much as possible. Because people who are sensitive to caffeine might deal with issues like insomnia, irritability, panic attack, which is obviously going to make your mood swings worse.

Eating healthy will make you feel better. Avoid unnecessary carbohydrate and processed foods. Go for a nutritious, well-balanced diet that has complex carbs along with protein. Of course, eating fresh fruits is also very beneficial. When people are depressed, it is natural for them to fill up on junk food. However, remember it is not a permanent solution, and it will be only pleasurable for a short period.

5. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER

Drinking water is known to calm your nerves, and we are not talking about sugary drinks. You must absolutely avoid sugary drinks and those energy drinks as well. They are not good for your health and your mood swings as well. Drink plain water and drink plenty of it. You can add lemon to add a little zest.

6. AVOID ILLICIT DRUGS

Drugs impact the way we deal with life, and of course, its impact is always negative. They may help you get temporary relief, but that only lasts until you are high. As the effect wears off, you are back to square one now with some health risks too.

Distraction is a great way of dealing with mood swings, and what better way to distract yourself than finding an interesting hobby that defines you the best. Whether it is a sport, art, music, or anything, choose whatever works for you. This will help you beat the stress and keep you balanced.

8. EXERCISE

Exercise helps in increasing endorphins – they are the “happy chemicals” that surrounds our brain to bring back the joy. Get at least 30-minute exercise daily. You do not have to get heavy exercise, a simple walk or jog would be great as well.

9. NUTRITION

Nutrition is very important when it comes to mood management. Get the adequate amount of nutrition. Beans, Greek yogurt, sweet potato, kefir, strawberries, mushrooms, etc. are some food items that are enriched with nutrients.

Maintaining a daily chart can be helpful to people who are dealing with mood swings. Doing things at a proper time every day can help in bringing a change in your mood.
